CHARLESTON - Tony "Gramps" Hines, 86, died April 18, 2006, at his home.
Born Dec. 12, 1919, in Phillippy, Tenn., to the late Will and Laura Murphy, he was raised after the age of 10 by the late Walter Hines.
He was united in marriage to Samela Hines who preceded him in death in 1986. He later married Hattie Henry Hines who preceded him in death in 2000.
Two sons, George Hines and Robert Hines; one daughter, Ethel Johnson; five brothers; and one sister also preceded him in death.
Survivors include: three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Jeanette Hines, Clifford and Francis Hines and Charles and Cora Mae Hines, all of Charleston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Johnny Atchison of Charleston and Jean and Clarence Davis of Seattle; and a grandson whom he raised, J.B. Stanback of Sikeston; 62 grandchildren; 124 great-grandchildren and 42 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Williams Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bowden Civic Center in Charleston. Jermaine Carter will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Charleston.
