BENTON - Salaries and fees of Scott County offices will be increased. Most of the increases, authorized by the Legislature, are effective next year. The prosecuting attorney has been raised $3,200 a year, based on the country's assessed valuation of more than $49 million. The sheriff and his chief deputy will be allowed an increase of from $100 to $200 per month on mileage fees.
SIKESTON - Mayor Robert Stearnes of Sikeston set aside the month of November for the NAACP membership drive at a proclamation signing recently. The Sikeston Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was reorganized in February 1981, and since that time, the Sikeston branch has been instrumental in promoting and establishing a growing relationship between the black community and the city government, the proclamation states.
SIKESTON - Today's cold and snowy weather can only mean one thing - Christmas is on its way. And with the season comes the annual Community Christmas Campaign sponsored by the Standard-Democrat and Democrat Printing. This year the campaign will provide 250 families within Sikeston that extra help necessary to bring a smile to a child's face and a feeling of relief to a parent's heart when they are able to provide their children with a warm meal.
