Woman injured in freak accident

NEW MADRID -- An Indiana woman was seriously injured after part of a brake from another vehicle crashed through the windshield of the vehicle she was riding in and struck her.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports, at 7 p.m. Sunday about a mile north of New Madrid, motorist Howard E. Heyn, 65, of Valparaiso, Ind., was following a vehicle on southbound Interstate 55 when part of the brake of vehicle he was traveling behind dislodged and struck Heyn's vehicle. The brake part went through the windshield and struck Heyn's passenger, Janet A. Heyn, 62, of Valparaiso.

Heyn was air evacuated to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. The driver of the vehicle with the faulty brake remains unknown.
