SIKESTON -- A Sikeston man was killed in what appears to be a firearm accident Friday.
The Sikeston Department of Public Safety received a call at approximately 10:20 a.m. Friday reporting a person was shot at Re-Armms, a local gun shop and firing range located at 801 S. Main in Sikeston.
Upon arrival, officers found a 32-year-old white male with a single gunshot wound.
The victim, Jay Reed, was pronounced dead at the scene by Scott County Coroner Scott Amick. Reed appeared to have been cleaning a pistol which discharged.
Reed had been target shooting prior to the incident, according to the DPS news release. He had purchased a bottle of cleaning oil and taken it to the shooting area. There was cleaning material, including the oil and cleaning pads on the counter in the shooting area of the store. There was no one else in the area at the time of the incident.
An investigation into this incident is continuing, according to the DPS.
