Phone scam attempted in Scott County

Friday, February 3, 2006

BENTON -- A phone scam Thursday in Scott County has prompted officials to remind area residents not to give out personal information over the telephone.

According to Lt. Jerry Bledsoe of the Scott County Sheriff's Department, around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, a lady from rural Chaffee area received a phone call from a male. The person told her that her checking account number was all over the Internet. The caller said he was going to help her get it off the Internet but needed her to get her checkbook. The lady pretended to be getting her checkbook and returned a short time later telling the caller she could not find it. The caller then pressured the lady to just get a canceled check. The caller finally became irritated at the lady, called her stupid and hung up.
