Area roundup: Delta's Below scores 55

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

DELTA -- Terrence Below set Delta's single-game scoring record with 55 points, and the Bobcats scored 45 points in the fourth quarter en route to an 89-87 victory against Chaffee on Tuesday at home.

Below, who broke the record that his uncle, Sam Below, and Neal Hester shared (48), was 22 for 27 from the field, all on 2-point field goal attempts. He hit all 11 of his free throws and scored 21 points in the fourth quarter.

"They were guarding him," Delta coach Shawn Kinder said, "but he was just hitting his shots."

Two of Delta's starters fouled out, and starter Aaron Kinder's playing time was limited due to illness.

"With those two starters fouling out and Aaron being sick, Terrence basically took the game over," Kinder said. "We got in foul trouble, and he just took the load on his shoulders."

Kinder added 12 for Delta (5-12), and Nathan Stroder netted 11.

For Chaffee, which scored 31 points in the final frame, Steven Dooley scored 24 points, Andy Hendrix had 23, Augi Orr scored 14 and Michael Lee added 10.

SIKESTON -- D.D. Gillespie scored 37 points to lead Scott County Central to a high-scoring home win.

The game featured 78 field goals, 36 fouls and 56 free throws.

"It was the craziest game I've ever seen," Braves coach David Heeb said. "We were up by about 19 with 2 minutes to go, and I bet they hit three 3s in about 12 seconds."

Richard Brownley added 20 points for Scott County (12-12), which has won four of its last five to climb back to .500. Pershard Owens had 19, and Caleb Johnson netted 18.

CARUTHERSVILLE -- Notre Dame outscored Caruthersville 46-25 in the second half and cruised to a road win.

Ryan Willen led the Bulldogs (21-3) with 23 points. Xavier Delph had 11, and Alex Ressel threw in 10.

STE. GENEVIEVE -- Meadow Heights led 45-19 at halftime, but the Panthers had to hold off Valle's comeback to pick up a road victory.

Anthony Bollinger was 11 for 12 from the field, scoring 28 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, to lead Meadow Heights (15-6). Terry Wagner added 12, Michael Collier had 11 and Bryce Wallis scored 10.

PERRYVILLE -- Perryville built a double-digit lead by halftime and coasted to a home victory.

The Pirates (10-13) held a 38-25 lead at halftime and turned it into a 64-35 lead by the close of the third quarter.

Rick Dunn led Perryville with 22 points, while Tyler Bauwens scored 17 and Ryan Lorenz netted 11.

Austin Hahs and Johnnie Price each had 11 points for Oak Ridge.

LEOPOLD -- Leopold was outscored by nine in the second half but held on for a home win.

Matt Stoverink scored a game-high 17 points for Leopold (7-12), and Eric Seiler added 14.

Tim Landing led Zalma with 12 points, Daniel Schrader had 11 and Trevin Taylor had 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

PUXICO -- Meadow Heights overcame a lopsided free throw difference and picked up its second win on the road.

The Panthers (2-15), a first-year varsity program, shot 16 free throws while Puxico went to the line 35 times.

Amanda Hendrickson led 11 Meadow Heights scorers with nine points.
