Nobody asked me but...football season is the most wonderful time of the year. Friday night under the lights, the bands and the anticipation of kickoff. Wow, I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it! Whether it be high school, college or Eskimos playing in the snow, I will be glued to the tube if any football game is on.
Nobody asked me but...what is the deal with the movement of coaches from school to school in this area? Stability leads to success and with the turnover in the coaching ranks lately, one would presume that success is short-lived for some programs.
Nobody asked me but...why in the world is West Plains in Class 4, District 1 along with Sikeston, Cape Central and Poplar Bluff? Isn't West Plains in Kansas? Seriously, by the time a team returned from West Plains it will be Saturday morning. There has got to be a better option.
Nobody asked me but...Earl Wheeler, quarterback from Dexter High School, is the best football player I have seen from this area. Granted my knowledge of local football players is not vast, however, from the mid-80's until now, I haven't seen anyone like Mr. Wheeler. Some say he was an even better baseball player than football player, which is scary.
Nobody asked me but...the St. Louis Cardinals will win the World Series this year in six games over the New York Yankees. With a healthy Chris Carpenter and the newly acquired Mark Mulder, the Cards should have enough pitching to take the series.
Nobody asked me but...along with being a great hitter for average and power, Albert Pujols is an absolute joy to watch on the base paths. He's not the fastest guy, but he is very aggressive and puts the pressure on the fielder to make a play. It is something that is overlooked in his game, and that is why he is the best player in baseball today.
Nobody asked me but...I missed the boat on Lance Armstrong. What he has accomplished by winning seven straight Tour de France's is something that none of us will ever see again. To say this man is not an athlete is laughable. An added plus for Armstrong is that he is dating a Missouri native in Sheryl Crow, who is from Kennett.
Nobody asked me but...the best sports movie of all time is "Hoosiers." When coach Norman Dale states, "I love you guys," give me a tissue and fast! A moment that one might miss in the movie is the scene were coach Dale is talking to star Jimmy Chitwood.
Coach Dale is talking with Jimmy as he shoots baskets on an old worn down backyard basketball court. The scene is no longer than a couple of minutes but as coach Dale talks, Jimmy just swishes shot after shot and the camera never cuts away from him. From the angle, there is no doubt that it is actually Jimmy shooting the basketball. No fancy camera tricks. For every up-and-
coming basketball player, coach Dale says it all with, "...team ball, fellas, team ball!"
And finally, nobody asked me but...Blake DeWitt is having a fine season in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system. Playing for the Columbus Catfish in Class A ball, DeWitt is leading his team in batting average, home runs, runs batted in, total bases, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, doubles and he is second on the team in triples.
Currently, DeWitt is batting .280 with 10 home runs and 61 runs batted in. DeWitt has blasted 30 doubles in 113 games and has secured three triples. He has scored 57 runs.
DeWitt has a slugging percentage of .426 and an on-base percentage of .333. Fine work, Mr. DeWitt, class of 2004 from Sikeston High School.
