Bland still alive at state meet

COLUMBIA -- Two Sikeston wrestlers competed in the Class 3 State Championships on Thursday.

Sophomore Gavilan Bland (152 pound) is still alive after the first day. He lost his first match to Chris Dopp of St. Charles West by pin in 1:35. Dopp is 27-0 this season.

Bland won his wrestleback match as he pinned Corey Witt of Smith-Cotton in 2:58.

Sikeston's Craig Burton (125) lost his first match by pin in 3:16 to Brady Gerstner of Carthage. He then was eliminated by Tony James of Wentzville Holt as he was pinned in 4:04.


Junior guard Brittney Peet scored 33 points to help lift Scott County Central to a road victory.

Chaffee (10-11) was led by Mindy Hendrix, who scored 17 points, and Keegan Orr, who added 15.
