WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - A former Sikeston, Mo., resident will oversee the development of the Winter Garden Theatre as general manager.

Alauna McMillen was hired by the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation and given the responsibility of planning, marketing, fund-raising and development. Once the theater renovations are complete and it is opened to the public, she will handle all operations.

"Alauna was the winner of a long process of a lot of applicants," said Ward Britt, Foundation president, in an interview with The West Orange Times. "She comes with great experience and great enthusiasm; and she's the right person for the job. We're thrilled to have her."

A 1994 graduate of Sikeston High School, McMillen earned degrees pertaining to the arts and management - a Bachelor of Science in economics and one in theater from Lyon College at Batesville, Ark., and a master's degree in performing arts management at Columbia College in Chicago.

Her resume includes stints with the 2001 Fringe Festival (as co-producer), SAK Comedy Lab (as house manager and production manager) and, most recently, the Central Florida Performing Arts Alliance (as director of programs and finance). The daughter of Ken and Vicki Rubenacker, she has also worked as a freelance producer for a number of theaters in Central Florida.

The original Winter Garden Theatre was first opened in the 1920s. Currently the theater is undergoing renovation with a grand opening roughly a year away.
