SIKESTON - Fire caused a flare-up of an oil cooking stove and gutted the three-room home of Louis Couch Sunday afternoon.

SIKESTON - Tornado-like winds hit the Sikeston area around midnight last night with trees uprooted, debris scattered around town and television antenna poles bent. Damage was caused at Mitchell-Sharp Chevrolet Co., where wind sucked out windows and flying glass chipped two stoves at Delta Furniture.

SIKESTON - In response to numerous requests by local residents, additional copies of Friday's edition of The Daily Standard will be available to the public Monday on a first-come, first-serve basis. All issues for the daily run, plus extra papers printed Friday, have been depleted and numerous residents had continued to contact the office for additional copies.


VANDUSER - National Guardsmen were ordered to the Sikeston and Vanduser areas after a visit Friday afternoon by Gov. John Ashcroft, who declared Scott and Cape Girardeau counties disaster areas. The designation is the first step toward obtaining federal disaster relief funds. The impact of Tuesday's devastating storm struck residents as they began the grimy task of cleaning up and fitting the pieces of their lives back together.

BENTON - At the Thursday County Commission meeting, architect Bob Stearnes presented a drawing of the proposed sheriff's department that he and Sheriff Bill Ferrell designed. The 5,400-square foot structure is expected to be constructed beside the current judicial building. "This location will minimize the chance of escape when we take the inmates to court," said Ferrell.


SIKESTON - The Delta Concerts Association is seeking subscribers to finance its new season of bringing live entertainment to Sikeston. Headquartered in the River Birch Mall, they will present three concerts during the fall and spring season.
