EAST PRAIRIE - Gene Barnes, 81, died at 1:45 p.m. Jan. 8, 2006, at the East Prairie Nursing Center.
Born Dec. 18, 1924, in East Prairie, son of the late Ferd Robert and Velva May Ray Barnes, he lived his entire life in Mississippi County where he owned and operated Barnes Flying Services for 46 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in East Prairie and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
On Dec. 30, 1956, in East Prairie, he married Norma Jean McMinn who survives of the home.
He is also survived by one nephew, Rick Barnes of Houston, Texas.
In addition to his parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Larry Lane officiating.
Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Sid Drummond, Milas Mainord, John V. McMinn, Winford Brown, Rick Barnes and Bruce DeField.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Martin Lucas, Bill Munger, Bill Thurmond, John Ponder, Harold Johnson, Leon Sterling, Larry Britt, Fred Douglas, J.W. Minehart Jr., Sam Barker, John D. Ray, A.L. Weaver, Joe Helms, Ronald Carter and Bryan Viets.
