60 years ago

SIKESTON - A bowling alley will be opened in the basement of the Peoples Bank building Wednesday, it was announced today. Bill Robertson is the owner.


SIKESTON - Construction of a new residence for Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Martin and children is under way on North Kingshighway.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - Kellett's Restaurant caught fire this morning at 6:45 a.m. in the kitchen. The fire started from a stove. It has not been determined the length of time the restaurant will be closed as a result of the blaze. Heavy smoke damaged the front of the restaurant.

SIKESTON - Wanda Brown of Sikeston recently won a queen-size quilt created and donated by A. D. Denbow, also of Sikeston. Proceeds from the drawing will be placed in the Missouri Delta Community Hospital Expansion Fund.


SIKESTON - Geneva Sexton, a Missouri Delta Community Hospital nurses aide for 10 years, was congratulated on her retirement by her Nursing Supervisor Karen Arnold. During a retirement tea, she received a red rose corsage and her co-workers honored her with a gift of a gold locket.

SIKESTON - Area nurseries report they are well stocked with Christmas trees and ready to meet family expectations. Dave Boardman, assistant manager at Garden Lane Nursery said, "We have three different types of cut trees that we are offering this year. They are all firs and any one of them would make a beautiful Christmas tree."


CHARLESTON - Dedication of the new Clara Drinkwater Library is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, followed at 2:30 p.m. by a ribbon cutting ceremony and then an open house at 4 p.m. Secretary of State Becky Cook, State Librarian Sara Parker and Joe Dark, administrator, will be speaking at the event.
