Nobody asked me but ...

Wednesday, January 4, 2006

Nobody asked me but...coach Paul Hale is the front runner for area boys coach of the year with the fast start of his Notre Bulldogs' basketball team. Hale built winners at Delta, Bernie and Dexter, and it looks like the coaching magic has translated up north.

Notre Dame had an excellent run in the seMissourian Tourney and proved it wasn't a fluke with a big regular season win over Charleston on Tuesday night.

If everything works out, it should be an interesting Class 4, District 1 final against Sikeston in late February, at the Dog Dome.

Speaking of Sikeston...welcome back to playing boys basketball. Several concerned citizens filed a missing team report over the break, but everything worked out for the best as Sikeston showed themselves and defeated Caruthersville on Tuesday night.

Chris Echols, a 6-foot-6 senior forward from Blytheville, Ark., is the best boys high school player I have seen up to this point in the season. The gym's ceiling can barley contain his hops. The unbelievable thing concerning Echols, is that his phone is not ringing off the hook from college coaches. Echols has recently qualified academically, so the offers should start to pour in.

Can anybody compete with a healthy Doniphan boys basketball team? An even better question might be, can the Dons stay healthy for the entire year?

Flying under the boys basketball radar, is how Kelly has bounced back from a rough start earlier in the season. Coach Corey Johnson seems to be making a name for himself as an excellent young coach in the area.

The five best players I have seen play at Mizzou:

Anthony Peeler

Doug Smith

Jon Sunvold

Steve Stiponavich

Kareem Rush

The five best players I have seen play at SEMO:

Ray Pugh

Terry Mead

Dwayne Rutherford

Jewell Crawford

Bud Eley

It was a good sight for Dexter Lady Bearcat fans to see junior Haylee Finch back on the court against NMCC after recovering from her knee injury. If Finch can get back to 100 percent, watch out for Dexter in district action.

I am glad Michael Vick and his Atlanta Falcons showed up to play the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. Getting blasted 44-11 reeks of mailing the season in early.

Speaking of Michael Vick, his brother Marcus Vick who is the starting quarterback for Virginia Tech, showed his class in a bowl game against Louisville, as he stepped on an opposing defensive player in Christian Laettner-type fashion. What is up with VA Tech? Is it becoming the modern-

day Convict U?

How many more times can ABC show Brady Quinn's sister? I stopped counting at 80. I get it, her boyfriend plays for Ohio State and her brother is at Notre Dame. Whom to cheer for? Do you think it helped that sister Quinn was somewhat attractive? I do.

Has the NBA season started yet? I miss the days of the Celtics versus the Lakers. Bird/Magic, Kareem/Chief, those were the golden days of the NBA. Five best players I have seen play in the NBA:

Larry Bird

Magic Johnson

Michael Jordan Charles Barkley

And finally, nobody asked me but...It has been a tough couple of days for your humble scribe. Yes, Dallas not making the NFL playoffs has put a damper on my overall outlook on life. I live and die on Cowboy football. Watching the Philadelphia Eagles blow the crucial game against the Washington Redskins, was like eating at a Chinese buffet; pleasing at first, but at the end you feel like puking.

Replacing the remote control: $20, Replacing the window the remote control went through: $100, Being a passionate Dallas Cowboy fan: priceless.

The countdown has begun until the start of next year's NFL season: nine months, six days, four hours and 48 minutes.
