SIKESTON -- Family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. P.J. Ponder Jr. will celebrate the couple's 70th wedding anniversary from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Sikeston.
Mr. Ponder and the former Evelyn Lankford were united in marriage Dec. 15, 1935, at Methodist Parsonage in Dexter. The Rev. Fred Statler officiated. They have three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sarah Ponder and Phil and Nancy Ponder of Charleston and the Rev. Carolyn Jo Ponder of South Lake, Texas, and the late Lee Ponder; and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Ponder lived in Sikeston, where they were active in Boy and Cub Scouts and the Methodist church, until 1958 when they moved to Charleston. They resided in Charleston for 36 years and served on various boards at the Methodist church, and Ponder served on the city council of Charleston for several years. The couple retired from their Charleston automobile dealership, Ponder Chevrolet, in 1981. They returned to Sikeston 11 years ago.
Ponder is the son of the late P.J. and Ruthie Ponder Sr., who resided in the Dogwood Community. Mrs. Ponder is the daughter of the late Charles and Edith Lankford, who were of Bertrand.
