NEW MADRID -- John Alfred Hunter, 78, died Nov. 25, 2006, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Born Aug. 24, 1928, in New Madrid, he was the son of the late Tom Furg and Mary C. "May" Gallivan Hunter.
On April 19, 1954, in New Madrid, he married Marie Householder Hunter, who survives of the home.
A lifelong resident of New Madrid, where he owned and operated Hunter Service Station and was a rural mail carrier for 35 years before retiring in 1991. He was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Madrid. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of American Legion Post 595 in New Madrid and American Legion Post 595 Honor Guard. He also served as a city of New Madrid alderman for over 26 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: four sons and three daughters-in-
law, John and Anita Hunter of St. Louis, Tom Hunter of Kabul, Afghanistan, Shapley R. and Judy Hunter of Thebes, Ill. and Jim Digges and Susan Hunter of Hunterville, N.C.; one daughter, Leann Hunter Branum of New Madrid; three brothers, Gallivan and Martha Hunter and Henry and Mary Ann Hunter of New Madrid and Jimm Digges Hunter of Rolla; one additional sister-in-law, Doris Hendricks of Cape Girardeau; one additional brother-in-law, Jerry Householder of Benton; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one special sister, Betty Sides; and two "spare sons," Michael Hunter and Phillip Traughber.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Joanne Hunter and Nancy Kaiser; and two brothers, Tom Hunter Jr. and Charles R. Hunter.
Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Madrid. The Rev. Randy Tochtrop will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
