SIKESTON - Spring is just around the corner, as jonquils have begun to push through the ground at the editor's home.

CHARLESTON - Charles Bethune, office manager for the International Shoe Co. plant here, said that the factory now employs from 365 to 433 people, depending on orders. He talked to the Kiwanis Club last night and displayed shoes made at the plant.


SIKESTON - Sikeston is gradually coming out of effects of the worst ice storm in many years. The storm struck the night of Jan. 31. Light and power and the telephone company crews have completed the task of repairing broken lines. The job of removing thousands of broken tree limbs still remains.

SIKESTON - Poplar Bluff's Maurice Roberts successfully tried to draw a charging foul against Danny Sims of Sikeston in Friday's boys basketball game. Roberts was an intimidating force Friday, as Poplar Bluff rallied for a 41-39 win over the Bulldogs.

CHARLESTON - Five arrests were made - two on federal warrants - in two separate drug raids Thursday, conducted by the Drug Enforcement Agency, SEMO Task Force, federal marshals and local law enforcement officers. Officers struck simultaneously around 11:30 a.m. at the West Side Service Station in East Prairie and a used car business near Bertrand.


SIKESTON - David Gelscheimer reported $1,500 in golf equipment had been taken from a shed located at the Country Club. He told officers that the equipment had been taken sometime between Jan. 24 and Feb. 6 when he noticed the hasp and lock were missing from the shed and the clubs were removed.


SIKESTON - The Junior and Senior High Church League will be having a basketball shootout this Saturday at the Sikeston High School Fieldhouse, with games scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
