Man holds five children hostage, is later arrested

CARUTHERSVILLE - A man, armed with a rifle, who held five small children in a house is in custody.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department received a call from a woman who said she had been assaulted by her boyfriend and threatened with a gun. The caller stated the boyfriend had become enraged, was inside a residence north of Braggadocio with five small children and armed with a rifle.

As deputies converged on the area they found the 27-year-old male suspect from Hayti walking in the rain along a county road. He was taken into custody without incident.

A 22-caliber rifle, allegedly used in the assault, was recovered at the scene. The children were not harmed during the incident.

The suspect is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail on charges of second degree domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon by exhibiting, five counts of endangering the welfare of a child and a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. No bond was set pending further review by the county prosecutor.

Also under investigation is the theft of construction equipment from the Crossroads Worship Center in Braggadocio.

Glyn Davis, pastor, contacted the sheriff's department at 1:45 p.m. Monday to report tools stolen from the church, currently undergoing renovation. Davis stated he and others began missing tools as they were needed during the day and discovered someone had entered the church and stolen several items.

Missing are a Milwaukee compound miter saw, a four-foot Lakewood industrial fan, a Makita drywall gun along with several other tools. The loss was estimated at $1,500.
