SIKESTON - W.H. "Billy" Edwards has purchased the interest of Fred Cole in the Sikeston Marble Works and will now be associated with his father, W.C. Edwards in the business.

NEW MADRID - Plans for a new paper mill in New Madrid which will employ 200 with an estimated annual payroll of $2 million will be made at a public meeting Feb. 10.


SIKESTON - The post office reported today that 10 aliens registered during January, an annual requirement. This was the same number which registered last year. Six were from Sikeston.


CHARLESTON - The Charleston R-2 District School Board Tuesday voted four to two that it should start taking applications for a new school superintendent.

SIKESTON - Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and the Sikeston United Way announced Friday the formation of a communitywide volunteer awards program. The Bell Volunteer Awards are designed for the grassroots volunteers who serve Sikeston with a continuing gift of time rather than a specialized skill, according to Mark Walker, community relations manager for Southwestern Bell.

SIKESTON - A man was shot in a drive-by shooting at approximately 10:15 a.m. today at a carwash on the corner of Ruth and Southwest streets. The victim reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg, following several shots fired from a handgun. Unconfirmed reports say at least four shots were fired from a black vehicle. A search was under way immediately after the incident for a suspect described by witnesses.


CHARLESTON - Thursday's action at the 1995 Charleston High School Girls' Invitational basketball tournament was canceled due to inclement weather, according to tourney director Beverly Wright.
