CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston junior varsity basketball team defeated Notre Dame's J.V. 53-49 to take first place in the Notre Dame Junior Varsity Invitational Tournament on Friday.

The Bulldogs fell behind early, trailing 9-4 after one quarter, but they battled back to knot the score at 17-17 by halftime.

Sikeston then took a 33-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter where they made key plays down the stretch to propel the team to the victory.

It's the second time in three years Sikeston has won the tournament.

"This is a nice win for us," said Sikeston coach Brian James. "Notre Dame has a really good team with a few good freshmen and they're going to be a handful for the next few years. I'm really pleased with our free throw shooting and I thought this was our best game so far defensively. We started off a little lethargic, so it was nice to see the guys respond the way they did."

Sikeston (3-0) was led by Brandon Washington's 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Freshman Michael Porter battled foul problems from the beginning but still came through with 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Dominique McCray had 13 points and three assists. Ashtin Hubbard had seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Sherwin Jones followed up with nine points, seven of which came during the crucial fourth quarter.

Sikeston will host Blytheville on Tuesday at 6 p.m. prior to the Bulldog varsity team's season-opener.
