60 years ago

SIKESTON - One of the worst epidemics of colds Sikeston has ever known in recent years has been prevalent during the past week, with half of the people in town afflicted. The schools have been hard hit, with as many as 410 children absent in one day this week.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - The Firemen's Tree of Lights has taken in $500 so far, it was announced today. The money contributed will be used to purchase gifts for approximately 600 children.

20 years ago

SIKESTON - National Guard units from Sikeston, Portageville, Charleston and Dexter are among those scheduled to participate in the Guard's engineer exercise in Honduras early next year. Confirmation of their involvement was received this week for the headquarters of the Missouri National Guard. About 3,100 engineers, military police, medical, aviation and other personnel are scheduled to travel to Honduras during the first five months of 1986 to participate in a combined exercise in the highlands of the north central area of the nation.

SIKESTON - During the Christmas holiday mailing season, Nov. 25 through Dec. 25, the U.S. Postal Service expects to receive 139 million cards and letters and 99 million parcels. "The mail is beginning to pick up locally," said Joe Nabors, customer service supervisor for the Sikeston Post Office. "We've really been noticing it over the past few days. We anticipate Dec. 18-22 to be the busiest time for us. We get a lot of volume the closer it gets to Christmas so I can't stress enough to mail as early as you can."


SIKESTON - Adults and children alike spent time Saturday at the Southeast Missouri Toy Farm Show conducted Saturday at the Ramada Inn in Miner. Visitors toured through the banquet rooms full of antique and new toy tractors in the hopes of finding the one they've been looking for.
