Heartland Wrestling Team
DESOTO -- The Heartland wrestling team started off the season with great success, bringing home six championships, five second place medals, seven third place medals and four fourth place finishers.

Out of the 22 wrestlers competing in the tournament there were 18 that finished in the top three of their divisions. These kids wrestled very well for the first time out this year, for some it was their first tournament ever.

Bringing home championships for the club were: Josh Stinnett, Gage Barber, Clay Williams, Blake Angle, Dustin Ruby and Cody Middleton. All six of these guys are returning from last year and they knew what they have to do to become winners.

Placing second in their classes were: Garrett Middleton, Steven Tidey, Conner Sniff, Trenton Gross, and Levi Henson.

Third place finishers were: Austin Bewley, Austin Branch, Aaron Day, Jon Tyler Day, Jacob Stinnett, Wade Gadberry and Luke Keefer.

Fourth place finishers were: Peyton Kennard, Jacob Kallemeier, Adam Kennard, and Kalen Bland.

The team is preparing for some big tournaments this month. There will be back-to-back competitions this weekend in St. Anne on the 10th at the ABC Tournament and in St. Charles on the 11th at the Francis Howell North Tournament.

The following weekend the team will travel to Wildwood for the Team St. Louis Officials Tournament.

"We are starting to have some pretty intense practices trying to prepare for the State Championship," said coach Dan Ruby. "Every one of our returning wrestlers has seen what the state level is all about and getting mentally prepared is the first step to becoming a state champion. These guys are setting great examples for our beginners.

"With the experience and drive of the second and third year wrestlers and the eagerness of the new guys, I look for the club to bring home more state champions than ever. These kids want to be the best and show it at every practice. Our coaching staff is here to help them achieve that goal."
