Former deputy set to appear in court today

Thursday, December 8, 2005

BENTON -- A former Dunklin County Sheriff's Department deputy facing charges for a home invasion attack is slated to appear before Judge David A. Dolan today.

James Eric Pickard, 32, originally of Gideon, was scheduled to appear before Dolan in Scott County Circuit Court after being granted a change of venue.

Authorities say Pickard was one of a band of attackers who invaded a home in Kennett.

During a previous hearing, Lillian Rechelle Calender, 34, testified that on July 10, Pickard and a number of others stormed into her home in the early morning hours.

During the attack, Calender reportedly cried out for someone to call the police. "James Pickard swung me by the hair of the head, slung me to the ground and said, 'I am the (expletive) police!" she testified.

On July 12, Dunklin County Prosecutor Stephen Sokoloff charged Pickard with felony burglary and third-degree assault with injuries and Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder relieved Pickard of duty.
