SIKESTON - One of the most stubborn fires ever to break out was at the John Russell residence on Stoddard Street Friday afternoon. It gutted the house. The cause of the fire, which required the Sikeston Fire Department to be on hand until Saturday morning, has not been determined.

BENTON - At a meeting of the Scott County Board of Education last night, it was approved that a redistricting plan to establish two school districts in the county will be submitted to the State Board of Education in Jefferson City for its March 1986 meeting.

BENTON - Scott County Jail at Benton was closed Thursday and prisoners were taken to adjoining counties, according to Sheriff Bill Ferrell. The move was necessitated due to the inability to obtain insurance for the jail facility. The rash of lawsuits against local government resulting in higher premiums and sometimes subsequent cancellations also has affected county jails.

SIKESTON - Smokeout Chairman Beth Mitchell and Mr. Butts, the oversized cigarette, presented Greg Turnbow, Alan Wire representative, with smokeout packets that were distributed to the employees of Alan Wire. The American Cancer Society provided packets to promote a smoke-free work environment.


SIKESTON - The 80th birthday celebration for Colonel Ellis Atchison was conduced Friday at Homestead. Among those attending the celebration were: Frank Myers; Maxine Myers, Tom Fay, Margratha Ford, Charles Atchison and Shelly Fay.
