EAST PRAIRIE - Julius N. Payne, 89, formerly of Cahokia, Ill., died at 2:30 a.m. Nov. 27, 2005, in the East Prairie Nursing Center.
Born Jan 18, 1916, in Warm Springs, Ark., son of the late John Wesley and Lola Madaline Flannigan Payne, he lived in East Prairie since 1995 after moving from Cahokia where he operated Payne's Roofing Company. He was of the Baptist belief.
In 1933, he married Daphne Marie Lands who preceded him in death in 2001.
In September 1980, he married Katie Griffin who preceded him in death in December 1993.
One son, Clinton Julius Payne; one daughter, Carol May Boren; two brothers, Luther Payne and Orville Payne; and three sisters, Lorene Evans, Velma Price and Vida Turley, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include: five sons, Charles W. Payne of East Prairie, Edward E. Payne of Patton; Wendell N. Payne of St. Louis, Dale L. Payne of Cahokia and Wilson A. Payne of Wingo, Ky.; three daughters, Annette M. Tyre of LaPorte, Texas, Elsie F. Brady of Landrum, S.C. and Lola E. Payne of E. Carondelet, Ill.; one brother, Jim Payne of Sikeston; one sister, Louise Stephens of Booneville; 34 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 37 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Jon Archie officiating.
Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery.
