ALTON, Ill. - Marcella Swinney, 84, died at 10:40 a.m. Nov. 19, 2005, at Eunice C. Smith Nursing Home in Alton.
Born Feb. 7, 1921, in Alton, daughter of the late Mark and Elizabeth Bray Brueggeman, she retired from Alton Unit School District 11 in 1984 after nine years of food service. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, VFW Post 138 Ladies Auxiliary and was an Alton Area Toast Mistress.
On Dec. 28, 1940, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton, she married Harold W. Swinney, who preceded her in death on March 7, 2005.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark and Bob Brueggeman; and one sister, Josephine Brueggeman.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Vicky Swinney of Mt. Vernon, Ind.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanne and Chuck Stalker of Sikeston, Mo., Liz and John Kuhn of Godfrey, Mary and Steve Lamken of Grand Island, Neb., and Dorothy and Jeff Ebbeler of Brighton; one brother, Jack Brueggeman of Alton; three sisters, Loretta Allen of Mansfield, Ohio, Mary Papin and Nonie Brunner, both of Godfrey; and 13 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with The Rev. Jim Walther officiating.
Burial will follow in Roselawn Gardens at Bethalto.
