ST. LOUIS (AP) - Children in Missouri were more likely to be born dangerously small, be enrolled in free school lunch programs and die as a result of violence in 1994 than in 1990, a study has found. The county-by-county study, which is being released today, concluded that the worst places to grow up are Pemiscot County and the city of St. Louis. The best places are Chariton County and St. Charles.


SIKESTON - Pets can be a delight for owners but for neighbors they can be a nuisance and sometimes a danger. From Jan 1 to Oct. 31, there have been 42 dog bites reported in the city of Sikeston. The reports of dog bites have not been limited to one neighborhood, but it was recently brought to the attention of city officials that the 200 block of Marie had an aggressive animal that had attacked one child in the area and intimidates others in the neighborhood. "I feel like I can't even go to my mailbox without having to worry about that dog," said Mrs. Bert Putnam.
