Sikeston netters beat Festus in new tennis playoff format

Thursday, May 18, 2006

SIKESTON -- In a newly formatted playoff round in Missouri high school tennis, Sikeston defeated Festus 6-0 in the Team District Round in Class 1 on Tuesday.

"We were fortunate to get this one played today," said Sikeston coach Brian James. "We had two or three rain delays and had a lot of help from Festus players and coach and some of our parents in getting those courts dried every time.

"Festus has a nice young team. Their top six are all underclassmen, so they'll be back in full force next year. We'll have tremendous competition on Saturday against either MICDS or John Burroughs at sectionals."

The new round pits the first place team in district play (Sikeston) against the fourth place team (Festus). Also played on Tuesday, Charleston, which took second in the district, played Dexter, which took third.

Charleston defeated Dexter 5-1 on Tuesday. With the wins, Sikeston and Charleston move on to the Class 1 Sectional on Saturday.
