Deadly holiday

MARSTON -- A Howardville man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Sunday, marking at least one fatality for the area during New Year's holiday travel.

Tommie L. Maxwell, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident on Route M, five miles south of Marston. The accident occurred at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Maxwell was a passenger in a southbound car driven by Eddie J. Maxwell, 40, of Lilbourn when the vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a ditch. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the vehicle then overturned ejecting Tommie L. Maxwell. He was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner Jimmy McSpadden at 12:05 a.m. Monday.

No injuries were reported for Eddie J. Maxwell.

Several people were injured in other area accidents over the holiday weekend.

Seventeen-year-old Trevor M. Walker of Doe Run sustained moderate injuries in single-vehicle accident on Route U near Bernie. According to a Patrol report, Walker ran his vehicle off the road, struck a utility pole and overturned at about 1:25 p.m. Tuesday. Walker was taken by ambulance to Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter.

At 3:20 p.m. Monday on Highway 25, three miles south of Dexter, Jonathon L. Slavings, 17, of Dexter was driving north when his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a fence. According to the Patrol report, the vehicle then hit a mailbox before coming to rest in a ditch.

Slavings was taken by ambulance to Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter for treatment of moderate injuries.

On Sunday at 3:45 a.m. on Highway 61, one mile south of Steele, Harvey G. Dry, 45, of Cooter was driving south when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a culvert and a light post before overturning.

Dry, who was moderately injured in the accident, was taken by ambulance to the Pemiscot Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Three people were injured in a two-car collision at 6:20 p.m. Saturday. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by John Bates, 45, of Bertrand had stopped on Route B, one mile south of Bertrand, to make a left turn. Bates' vehicle was struck in the rear by a southbound vehicle driven by Kristopher Brown, 21, of East Prairie.

Brown was taken by private vehicle to Missouri Delta Medical Center while Bates and a passenger in his vehicle, Karen Masterson, 42, of Bertrand, were taken by ambulance to MDMC. All were treated for minor injuries.

Also on Saturday, Rhonda L. Elder, 33, of Benton was injured in an accident at 12:10 p.m. on Route A, three miles west of New Hamburg.

The Patrol reported the accident occurred as Elder's vehicle was traveling east on an emergency run to the jail. The vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the right edge of the road. According to the report, Elder overcorrected causing the vehicle to cross the centerline, overcorrected again then ran off the right side of the road, through a fence and striking a tree.

Elder was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for treatment of minor injuries.
