SULLIVAN - Clyde J. Matthews, 100, died Oct. 14, 2005, at Sullivan.

Born April 7, 1902, in Scott County, near Sikeston, son of the late John Henry and Katherine "Kate" Johnson Matthews, he was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Sikeston and Salt Lake City, Utah. He started in the grocery business in 1924 as manager of the Kroger Grocery in Cairo, Ill. He owned and operated Matthews Grocery market in Miner from 1940-1954. He worked in other various businesses which included Craft Seed and Grain, Crenshaw Distributing, 7/11 Stores in Denver, Colo., and Salt Lake City, and Farmer's Market in Aztec, N.M. In 1981, he moved to Sullivan, where he lived until his death.

On Dec. 20, 1922, he married Lucille Elizabeth Inman, who preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 1997.

One sister, who died in infancy, also preceded him in death.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Norma Jean Matthews Sr. of Sullivan; two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty Jo Council of Monroe, Wash., and Judy and Jerry Parker of Aztec; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park in Sikeston with Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan in charge of arrangements.
