Two arraigned in murder case

Wednesday, May 3, 2006

NEW MADRID - A preliminary hearing date is set for one person in connection with the murder of a Texas man while a second person charged in the case is to return to court Thursday.

Michael D. Meador and Dennis Dinwiddie are being held in the New Madrid County Jail in connection with the shooting death of Sergio Burgos Gonzalez, 36, of Edinberg, Texas. Gonzalez's body was discovered April 22 in Mississippi County, where he apparently had been taken after being killed in New Madrid County.

Dinwiddie, 28, of Louisville, Ky., entered a not-guilty plea to charges of first degree murder and armed criminal action on Monday in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court. A preliminary hearing date was set for 1 p.m. June 1 by Associate Judge Charles Spitler.

During his court appearance Monday, Meador, 25, of Ste. Genevieve, was arraigned on charges of first degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and second degree trafficking in drugs. Meador indicated he is going to hire private counsel and was ordered to return to court Thursday.

The men were arrested following an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control, the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department, Mississippi County Coroner's Office, New Madrid County Sheriff's Department, Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff's Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Texas and Tennessee law enforcement agencies.

Dinwiddie and Meador are being held with no bond.

New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens said law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into Gonzalez's death with more arrests expected.

He requested anyone with additional information regarding the murder to contact the Sheriff's Department at 573-748-2516.
