Two are killed in morning accident

Thursday, January 5, 2006

MARSTON - Two drivers were killed when their trucks collided in an early morning accident on Interstate 55.

Details of the accident remain sketchy, however, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 12:43 a.m. today a tractor-trailer apparently collided with another tractor-trailer in the southbound lane of Interstate 55 at mile maker 44, located just north of Marston. The trucks then exploded into flames, killing both drivers.

New Madrid County Coroner Jim McSpadden pronounced the two men, one from central Missouri and the other from central Illinois, dead at the scene. Authorities were still notifying the victims' families at press time and had not released the names of the drivers.

McSpadden said the accident occurred when one of the driver's vehicles ran off the side of the interstate. As the driver attempted to bring his vehicle back onto the roadway it was struck by the second vehicle. Both vehicles caught fire and burned.

Portageville Police Chief Ronnie Adams and his officers were paged out to respond to the accident at 12:45 a.m. today to direct traffic because the crash blocked both northbound and southbound lanes. Traffic was redirected through Portageville until about 4:45 a.m.

The lanes were reopened to traffic as authorities continued their investigation at the scene and cleared debris. Early today the southbound I-55 was reduced to one-lane as the investigation continued.
