CRYSTAL CITY -- Charleston traveled to Crystal City and lost a tough one 14
-8 and fell to 0-1 in Class 2, District 2.
Crystal City scored first as a 68-yard drive was rewarded when Dominique Hall scored from two yards out at 5:48 of the first quarter. After the PAT, Charleston trailed 7-0 after one quarter.
Neither team scored in the second quarter as Charleston moved the ball all half but made costly turnovers to prevent scoring in the first half.
In the third quarter, Crystal City made another long drive as they went 65 yards and reached paydirt on a Neil Stohkirch 3-yard run. At 5:25 of the third quarter, Crystal City led 14-0.
The Bluejays finally got on the scoreboard on a Josh Marshall quarterback keeper for a 3-yard touchdown. Marshall found Justin Clark in the end zone for a two-point conversion and Charleston trailed 14-8 with 2:20 to go in the third quarter.
Charleston had the football inside the opponents 10-yard line on two different occasions only to come away empty handed. One attempt resulted in a turnover on downs at the 7-yard line and another occurred in the fourth quarter as the Bluejays seemed primed to take the lead as they had the football 1st-and-goal at the 9-yard line with 2:20 left in the game.
Marshall was picked off in the end zone by Crystal City with 1:05 to play in the fourth quarter. Charleston came up short against Crystal City and lost 14
Charleston dominated in total yards as they gained 287 yards to Crystal City's 158.
Joseph Watts led the Bluejays rushing attack as he gained 196 yards on 30 carries. Marshall picked up 21 yards on eight carries and Clark rushed two times for 13 yards.
Marshall completed four passes for 34 yards with an interception. Jamarcus Williams had three receptions for 29 yards and Clark caught one pass for five yards.
Charleston (5-3, 0-1 districts) is at home on Friday as they will entertain Grandview.
New Madrid County Central football team notched a big road district win as they defeated the Perryville Pirates 34-14.
Printice Willis led the Eagles in rushing as he gained 132 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns. Antonio McIntosh had a nice night as he rushed for 113 yards on 14 carries and scored a touchdown.
Tommy Rowe had a rushing touchdown and rushed for 54 yards on two carries. Quarterback Leslie Williams also had a rushing touchdown on three carries for 12 yards.
Williams completed one pass for 20 yards to Woody Smelser. McIntosh took a handoff and completed a 7-yard pass to Williams.
NMCC (6-2, 1-0 districts) has a monster game against district rival Dexter Bearcats (5-3, 1-0 districts) at home on Friday night.
