SIKESTON - Mrs. Evelyn Burns entertained guests at her home in honor of her daughter, Judy Faye, who celebrated her eighth birthday.

SIKESTON - Recovery Inc. was the name chosen for the group of Sikeston ministers and laymen who are organizing to find ways of improving conditions in Sunset Addition and other areas where there is substandard housing. The group is in the process of forming a corporation.

SIKESTON - Firemen were called to extinguish a blaze at the Sikeston Compress at 9:29 p.m. Tuesday. Damage was slight on the west end section of the building which is used for storage.

NEW MADRID - The Corps of Engineers has been conducting dredging operations in the Mississippi River along the New Madrid bend. The boat filters sand out of the water, keeping the channel open for barge and other traffic in the river.

NEW MADRID - Zachary Moore, son of Eric and Regina Moore of New Madrid, won the New Star Discovery State Contest in Springfield in the 0-7 month age category for boys. He also won trophies in the Prettiest Eyes, Product Shot, Sports Snapshot and Head Shot. In addition to receiving a three-foot trophy, he received a $100 savings bond and his entry fee paid to the national contest Aug. 8-10 in Lisle, Ill.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston chapter of the Southeast Missouri State University Booster Club hosted a get-to-know-the-coaches lunch at Bo's Banquet Room Wednesday, with key speakers SEMO football coach John Mumford and new men's basketball coach Gary Garner.
