CHAFFEE -- Merlene Whorton, formerly of Morley, died at 1:25 a.m. June 13, 2007, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born Jan. 30, 1928, in Selmer, Tenn., daughter of the late John Edward and Annie Jones Wyatt, she retired from Thorngate in Chaffee, where she worked as a presser, in 1990. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Morley VFW Post 5368.
In September 1947 she married James Whorton who preceded her in death on June 16, 1980.
One son, Melvin Whorton; and six brothers and five sisters also preceded her in death.
Survivors include: four sons, Loyd Whorton of Cape Girardeau, Roger Whorton of East Prairie, James Whorton of Chaffee and Mardie Whorton of Morley; six daughters, Sue Glenn of East Prairie, Peggy Taylor of Morley, Marvalene Whorton and Teresa Whorton of Chaffee, Margaret Yarbrough of Hartman, Ark., and Loretta Gadberry of Blodgett; one sister, Helen Baccus of Sikeston; and 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Oran where services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Randy Conn will officiate.
Burial will follow in the New Morley Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Kenneth J. Taylor, Brandon Gadberry, Matthew Lane, Travis Wallace, Rodney McAvee, Justin Mates and Andy Conn.
