Jacob Murphy drops first match but stays alive with victory in wrestleback bracket

COLUMBIA -- Sikeston wrestlers Gavilan Bland and Jacob Murphy began their quests for state wrestling titles Thursday night in Columbia.

Murphy, a freshman, lost his first round match to Neosho's Trevor Hughes by fall in the 112 pound division. However, Murphy stayed alive in wrestlebacks, defeating Jake Manaska of St. Charles West 10-3. Murphy will be back in action today against an undetermined opponent.

In the 119 pound division in Class 2, Dexter's Mikey Henley won his first match 12-10 over Trevor Stevenson of Excelsior Springs. He will take on Nathan Fortner of Seneca today.

In the 103 pound division in Class 2, Dexter sophomore Brittany Waldner lost by technical fall in her first round match to Trevor Ditto of Boonville. Waldner was then eliminated from the event when she lost by fall to Joe Godsey of Reeds Springs in wrestlebacks.
