Road, bridge projects set by MoDOT

SIKESTON -- While a drop in funding is anticipated to start in 2010 for the Missouri Department of Transportation, there are several important road and bridge projects already scheduled to be completed over the next couple of years.

One of the most anticipated projects in Scott County is the construction of an outer road to connect Route AB, which leads to the SEMO Port and is near the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, to Route K in Scott City.

"There are federal funds that will help make that project happen -- that project is in the pipeline," said Bill Robison, planning manager for MoDOT's southeast district. "We're completing environmental work to begin that project. We have to follow federal laws and guidelines regarding impacts the project could have on the environment."

There are between 12 and 24 months left in a study which is assessing the impacts to the environment, according to Robison.

"Then we have to share that with the Federal Highway Administration -- they will review and approve the environmental documentation. After the approval from Federal Highway Administration, then the design phase could begin," he said. "The bidding would follow the engineering and design work."

Another project which will have portions both in Scott and Mississippi counties is the resurfacing project on Interstate 57.

The southbound lanes of I-57 are slated to be completed this year while work on the northbound lanes is scheduled to being in the fall of 2009. "That's a very big project for the counties in this area," Robison said.

Also in Scott County, a bridge on Route A near New Hamburg will be addressed.

"That bridge will be replaced in early 2009," Robison said. "We also have a bridge replacement project in Scott County on Route H which is in the Diehlstadt area. That would be early in 2010."

In New Madrid County, "we're doing some work to Highway 60 coming up next fall," Robison said.

Work will include diamond grinding and pavement rehabilitation on the westbound lanes from Interstate 55 to Dexter.

"There are also some important bridge replacement projects in New Madrid County that are coming up," Robison added.

In particular, there are two bridges on Route D near Lilbourn slated for replacement this spring, he said.

"Those are some of the big projects for this area," Robison said.
