SIKESTON - Fred Jones Jr. announced in the Daily Sikeston Standard that he will be a candidate for the office of alderman from the fourth ward in the city election on April 6. Vodel L. "Red" Kirby, present alderman from Ward I, today announced his official candidacy for the re-election to the city council, also.

BENTON - Establishment of a care service center in Scott County for the elderly was discussed at a meeting attended by 30 people Tuesday afternoon in the courthouse. After hearing an outlined presentation by representatives of the Professional Care Centers Inc. and the Department of Community Affairs, a majority present expressed that it would be more practical to build a facility with money supplied by individuals than with county funds.

SIKESTON - Students got an hour out of school and teachers went to class Tuesday in the East Prairie R-2 School District. In a first aid workshop, teachers received instructions on how to deal with possible situations in classrooms, followed by questions.

SIKESTON - Members of the newly appointed Rental Review Board held their first meeting on Thursday at City Hall. Within months of implementation, the new law is designed to help local landlords and tenants.


SIKESTON - Perfect Sunday school attendance awards were presented to members of the Clines Island Church for 1997. Honored were: Pat Baldwin, 14 years; Kathie Snider, eight years; Sue Snider, 13 years; Marian Ledbetter, 19 years; and the Rev. Ron Ledbetter, pastor, who has had perfect attendance for 34 years.
