SIKESTON -- A Friday afternoon pursuit by Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers ended at the front door of the Scott County Sheriff's Department.
At around 5:20 p.m. Friday, Sikeston DPS officers stopped a Cape Girardeau man on Main Street near Salcedo Road in Sikeston. As officers approached the car, the suspect fled in his vehicle. Officers gave chase and pursued the suspect north on U.S. Highway 61.
The pursuit left the city of Sikeston and continued north with the suspect leading officers through the Haywood City area, Morley and Benton. The pursuit ended when the suspect surrendered at the front door of the Scott County Sheriff's Department. Sikeston DPS officers arrested the driver and transported him back to Sikeston.
During the pursuit, officers witnessed the driver throw an item from his vehicle. After the pursuit, the item was collected from the roadside. The large plastic bag contained approximately four pounds of marijuana.
Officers are seeking charges on the driver for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and other traffic related offenses.
The suspect's name is being withheld pending formal charges from the Scott County Prosecutor's Office.
As of press time, the suspect remained in custody at the Sikeston DPS holding facility.
