LILBOURN - James Edward Young, 67, died Aug. 26, 2007, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born on July 18, 1940, in New Madrid, to the late Pauline (Young) Jones and Odie Fields, he was nicknamed "Sam." He was raised by his Aunt Minnie Yeager in Chicago. He attended the Chicago Public Schools.
Sam was the eldest child spanning two families, one on his mother's side with eight siblings and one on his father's side with six other brothers and sisters. He split his time between Chicago and Howardville, spending most of his youth in Illinois and his latter years in Missouri.
As a young man, Sam loved fast cars and sharp, stylish clothes. His trademarks were hats for every occasion, and sunglasses wherever he went. It was during this period that he renamed himself "Sam KOOL," a name that stuck with him throughout the rest of his life.
He was a gentle kind of guy who had a smile and laugh that could win you over. He had a great sense of humor and a flair for the dramatic. There was a lot of genuine love for Sam from all who knew him. Family, friends and casual acquaintances enjoyed being around him. All of whom now mourn his passing.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a son, Christopher Evans (Crystal); three grandchildren, Qhariannah, Quintessah and Quiante of Naperville, Ill.; eight sisters, Elosie Hoskins (Herman) of Chicago, Annette Jackson and Patricia Jackson, both of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Sherry Stokes (Jessie) of Chicago Heights, Margie Word of Howardville, Harriett Jones of Kansas City, Rebecca Jones of Indianapolis and Mary Jones of Glendale, Ariz.; six brothers, Teraine Jackson of Kalamazoo, Otis Jackson (Shirley) of Chicago Heights, Robert Jones of Elkhart, Ind., Earnest Jones of Glendale, Atlas (Lena) Jones of Manassas, Va. and Johnnie (Christy) Jones of Indianapolis. He also leaves two aunts, Versell Young of Chicago and Willie Mae Neal of Bloomington, Ill. and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ponder Funeral Home in Lilbourn. The Rev. Earl L. Grissom will officiate.
Internment will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery in New Madrid.
Pallbearers will be: Earnest Jones, Atlas Jones, Johnnie Jones, Keith Word, Tim Word and James Word.
