SIKESTON - Fred L. Bowman has bought Snyder's Grocery and Market on West Gladys Street. He is now operating it as Bowman's Food Market.
EAST PRAIRIE - The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission in Pittsburgh, Pa., announced the award of a second medal following the July 4 rescue from drowning of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Emro Hockersmith. The award will go to Miss Connie Sorrells, 17, of Owosso, Mich., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Harris of East Prairie, who helped save the children. She aided Jimmy Layne, 17, her companion, in the rescue. Layne died in the attempt to save the children from the Mississippi River.
CHARLESTON - The new queen of the Charleston Dogwood-Azalea Festival is 17-year-old Colby Stallings. She was crowned at the Charleston Junior High School Thursday night. Traci Moore, 17, was named second runner-up and first runner-up is Jami Stanley, 16.
EAST PRAIRIE - The Kelly-Benton FFA chapter attended the Area 12 Banquet and Awards Ceremony March 19 in East Prairie and left with member Brian Heuring chosen from Area 12 as State FFA Officer. Heuring will vie for president of the State FFA Association through an interviewing process at the convention.
SIKESTON - The Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker at VFW Stadium to arch-rival Cape Girardeau Central, Wednesday, 7-5 in eight innings. "We played well enough to win. Brent (Self) threw well enough to get the win, but we just didn't get the hits when we needed them and they got the hits when they needed them," said Sikeston baseball coach Kevin Self.
