Local agency adds a new local partner

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Brian Self
SIKESTON - Brian Self acknowledges the value of roots. Not only does the Sikeston native admit his roots are deeply embedded in his hometown, he also points out so are the roots of the insurance agency where he is now a partner.

In early December, Self joined Loy Welker as a partner in First National Insurance Agency. For years the agency was known as Scott-Huff Insurance, which has been a part of the community nearly nine decades.

Self, who has 16 years experience in the insurance business, formerly owned his own agency in Paragould, Ark., before returning to Sikeston nearly four years ago.

"I wanted to come home," he explained. "I have always had a desire to have a locally-owned insurance agency in my community, especially one that has had such a long history with our town."

He explained that the Scott-Huff agency was purchased by First National Bank. In 2001, Welker became the owner. Now the men are partners.

As an independent agency, Self said his company literally "covers the board" with insurance services. Available are commercial, auto, home, farm, group health and individual health insurance as well as bonds.

"If you have an insurance need we can fill it," he said, pointing out when he joined First National Insurance Agency in 2003 part of his mission was to expand the agency's efforts in the group health market.

And they can fill the need from a variety of sources since they represent an array of companies. Commercial insurers represented by First National Insurance Agency include CNA, Hartford, Continental Western, Columbia, Consumers and Safco. Personal insurance needs can be filled by such companies as AAA, Progressive or others.

Although located in the same building as Montgomery Bank's Miner branch facility at 2201 E. Malone Ave., Self explained the agency is independent of the bank. "But we have a great working relationship and are looking forward to continuing that," he added.

Along with Welker and Self, there are 10 other employees at First National Insurance Agency. According to Self, some of the company's employees were part of the original Scott-Huff Agency, providing additional experience and understanding of the community for their customers.

On staff are Judy McCann, Shirley Braden, Wanda Tomlinson and Kay Jackson, who originally were part of the Scott-Huff Agency, along with Teresa Geter, Jared Self, Teresa Griggs, Curtis Tomlinson, Kim Knodell and Missy Rice.

Just like its predecessor, Self described First National Insurance Agency as a family operation, noting Jared Self is his nephew and Teresa Griggs is his sister. "Really, though, we are all like family here," he added of the staff.

And he has family outside the agency, too.

The son of Don and Jerrolyn Self of Sikeston, Self is a 1986 graduate of Sikeston High School. He and his wife, Dana, have three children, Darby, 8, Nathan, 5 1/2 and Camryn, 2 1/2.

Self said it is good to be a hometown businessman.

"We are a friendly, hometown agency that strives to do everything we can for our customers. Our motto is do it right or not at all," he said. "I look forward to creating new relationships with businesses and individuals in our town and the surrounding area."

First National Insurance Agency is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
