BENTON -- The New Madrid County Central Eagles up opened up their baseball season with a road against the Kelly Hawks on Friday afternoon, 6-2.
The Eagles got solid pitching from starter Matt Williams to hold the Hawks to only four hits. Williams went six strong innings allowing only one earned run, three hits, walked seven and struck out four. Landon Lingle pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Eagles.
Defense was a bit shaky in the contest, as the teams combined to commit 11 errors.
"I thought we played real tentative and nervous at first," said NMCC head coach John Jones. "We booted the ball around a little bit and the pitcher was shaky at first.
"It took him a while, but when Matt is on he's really hard to hit. Once he got over the jitters he pitched a heck of a ballgame. It's a good first win for us."
Dylan Harris led NMCC offensively by going 3-for-4 including a triple, double, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Kyle Marshall also went 3-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.
