Gunman in robbery sought

Monday, August 27, 2007

HAYTI - Law enforcement officials are still searching for a gunman who robbed the Pilot Travel Center here early today.

At 12:53 a.m., the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call reporting the business had been robbed by a lone black male armed with a gun. According to Hayti Police Chief Paul Sheckell, the assailant ordered the shift manager into the office then struck the manager in the face with the gun. The suspect then removed an undetermined amount of cash from the office and fled on foot.

Hayti officers, the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department responded shortly after the robbery was reported. The Steele Police K-9 unit was able to pick up the scent of the suspect, tracking the man east of the business, where officers believe he got into a vehicle and fled the scene.

A number of items used in connection with the robbery were recovered, Sheckell said. These items will be forwarded to the Crime Lab in Cape Girardeau.

Anyone with any information about the crime is asked to contact the Hayti Police Department at 359-1259. All information will be kept confidential.
