SIKESTON - Mrs. T.C. McClure and daughter, Eleanor, will entertain Saturday with a miscellaneous shower at the Country Club complimenting Miss Sara Sue Keller.

SIKESTON - Frances Kay Whitaker, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Whitaker, won the first prize in The Daily Standard's Easter Coloring Contest. She received $5.

SIKESTON - The City Council canvassed the ballots of Tuesday's primary election at a called meeting Friday night, found no discrepancies and approved the results. Two absentee ballots cast in the primary and counted Friday were for Hugh T. McCollum. Councilman Arthur Ziegenhorn received 352 votes, McCollum 217 and James Clark 208. Ziegenhorn and McCollum face each other in the April 4 election for councilman. 20 years ago

March 25, 1987

SIKESTON - Teams of Sikeston Middle School students placed second and third in the Missouri State Odyssey of the Mind competition in Rolla.Students from gifted programs throughout the state worked in team competition.


CHARLESTON - The City Council authorized a construction contract for the reconstruction of East Commercial Street between Seventh and Thorn streets. The work will be done by the low bidder. Cowan Construction Co. of Sikeston, which submitted a bid of $168,838.30.

BENTON - Sheriff Bill Ferrell recently received notification the boiler in his office did not pass a recent safety inspection. The problem must be corrected within 30 days of the notice or the county will be subject to a $5,000 fine for each day of operation. The notice was issued by the Department of Public Safety Division of Fire Safety.
