MATTHEWS -- Gene Curtis, 69, died at 2:49 a.m. July 11, 2007, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born Aug. 28, 1937, in Matthews, to the late Alvin R. and Ollie Elizabeth Winters Curtis, he served in the U.S. Army at the end of the Korean War and was president and operator of a poultry farm. He was former mayor of Matthews and served as Matthews city judge and marshall. A lifetime member of the Big Prairie Jaycees, he was also a member of Sikeston Eagles Club Aerie No. 3319 and Sikeston Masonic Lodge No. 310.
On Oct. 24, 1974, in Matthews, he married Barbara I. Miller who survives of the home.
Others survivors include: one daughter, Emily Curtis of Sterling, Va.; four stepdaughters, Evelyn Curtis, Cindi Stobaugh, Laura Spraggs and Elaine Vandever of Matthews; five brothers, Pete Curtis and Buel Curtis of Matthews, Perry Curtis of Kingman, Ariz., J.H. Curtis of San Diego and Don Curtis of Sikeston; two sisters, Ruby Silverthorn of Sikeston and Barbara Lasters of Oran; and 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wallace Curtis and Nelson Curtis; and two sisters, Euphelia Curtis and Lois Hooks.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Grady Camp will officiate.
Burial will follow in Matthews Cemetery.
