MINER - Steps necessary to call an election seeking approval of a $163,000 federal loan to install a water system here are being taken. The election is expected to be called the first week of August, Mayor L.R. Wheeler said.
SIKESTON - Ticket sales for the 35th Annual Bootheel Rodeo are selling quite well with many box seats sold out at this time, according to Kevin Ward, rodeo chairman. However, bleacher seats are still available for four performances Aug. 6-9. Tickets are being sold for performances of Conway Twitty, Randy Travis, Sawyer Brown and Kenny Loggins.
SIKESTON - The Bowl-For-Kids'-Sake "Celebrity Day" will be Aug. 15 at Imperial Lanes, Highway 61 East in Sikeston. Participants will be supporting Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
SIKESTON - The executive office for Weed and Seed recently conducted a National Poster Contest. The local winners are Sloan Harris, kindergarten plus; Taneka Tate, Category I; Blake Pennington, Category II; Amber Peet, fourth grade; Katurah Topps, fifth grade; Ebony Jackson, Category III; and Fred Wims, Category IV. Honorable mention went to Desmond Jackson and Aaron Peet. The local winners' posters were mailed to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national Weed and Seed competition.
SIKESTON - Matt Shelton and Brad Heacox will be representing Sikeston on the Missouri State Baseball Traveling All-Star team. Both players played for the Sikeston Senior High Baseball team. Shelton and Heacox were picked by the Cape All-Star team coach. The two left for Desloge on Thursday and will be playing three games for the White Sox.
