SIKESTON - Herb Walton, partner in Walton and Williams, was elected president of the Lions Club at a meeting held Wednesday at the Hotel Dunn.

SIKESTON - More than 200 persons attended a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Garden of Memories. Flags of deceased veterans buried in the cemetery were displayed.

SIKESTON - Telephone prefixes in Sikeston and Morehouse will switch from GRanite 1 to 471 and from NOrthfield 7 to 667 in December. This involves no change in dialing procedures because the position of the numbers is identical to the letters.

SIKESTON - An exploratory committee was formed Thursday night to assemble support in Sikeston's outlying communities for a water district. "You've taken on a tough task. You must continue to volunteer and volunteer, and bring everybody else in to volunteer and volunteer," Bud Waters, a Sikeston engineer, said in a public meeting at the Salcedo Baptist Church.

SIKESTON - The City Council awarded the Joe Ruhl Trucking Company of Sikeston the bid to construct a temporary road at the Business and Technology Park, at their Wednesday afternoon special meeting. In all, six bids were received for the contract; Ruhl's bid of $42,992.05 was the lowest.


SIKESTON - A $300 reward is being offered by the city for information about who is involved with the recent vandalism at the Sikeston Recreation Complex. The city approved the offer of a $200 reward at their Wednesday meeting. And Jiggs Moore, Parks and Recreation Department director, reported that another $100 is being offer by Larry Tetley, Park Board chairman. The reward will be paid for information leading to the apprehension, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for vandalism on May 17 and 18.
