Rebels knock off Gideon; Risco loses on road at Clarkton

PORTAGEVILLE -- The Portageville Bulldogs improved to 7-5 Tuesday night, downing the Caruthersville Tigers 67-53.

Portageville trailed 33-26 at the half but responded in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 18-6 in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Byron Wright's 15. Bruce Mathis finished with 14 and Dometric Trotter had 12, including two 3-pointers.

Caruthersville was led by Khiry Carter and Rashad Fields who had 16 and 15 respectively.

Portageville will be back in action Friday night when they travel to South Pemiscot.

RICHLAND -- The Richland Rebels defended their home court against the Gideon Bulldogs Tuesday night, improving to 7-6 on the season by winning 64-52.

The Rebels overcame a four-point halftime lead by the Bulldogs, 22-18, by outscoring Gideon 20-6. That made it a 38-28 game in favor of the Rebels at the end of the third quarter.

Richland had five players who scored in double digits. Drew Thornton led the Rebels with 14 points. Mac Thornton followed with 12, Mikey Latham and Landon Miller each added 11 apiece, while Jon McGarity scored 10.

Jordan Boone led all scorers with a game high of 23 points and Dustin Horad added 18 for the Bulldogs.

Richland's next game will be at Advance on Friday night.

In junior varsity action, Gideon got past the Rebels, 67-50. Parker Evans led the Rebels with 14 points. Jesse Brown and Lloyd Barr added eight, respectively. Gideon was led by Tim Kelly who led all scorers with 27 points and Jordan Landers added 23 points towards the win.

CLARKTON -- The Clarkton Reindeer jumped out early on the Risco Tigers and rolled to a 79-67 win at home Tuesday night.

"(Clarkton) is fifth or sixth in Class 1 so they're pretty solid," said Risco coach Brandon Blankenship. "They're tops in the Tri-County Conference."

Clarkton led 21-5 after one quarter and 43-19 at the half. Risco rallied in the fourth, outscoring the Reindeer 30-8 in the final frame.

"They played their bench in the fourth and we got hot from three," Blankenship said.

Risco (2-8) was led in scoring by Keith Kimball and Kyle Hayes who finished with 13 and 12 respectively. Chris Williams added 11 and Kyle White 10.

Casey Redden paced Clarkton with 25 while Josh Brown and Devaris Parker each had 13.

Risco won the junior varsity game in overtime 62-61 to improve their record to 5-3. Zack Williams led the Tigers with 31 points.

Risco will host Campbell on Friday night.

SCOTT CITY (SMNS) -- Scott City pulled away from a 7-7 tie after one quarter to pound visiting Delta.

Ten players scored for the Rams (9-2), led by Caleb Estes with 13 points. Jake Campbell added 11.

Chase Rhodes paced Delta with 16 points. Tyler Martin had 10.

PUXICO (SMNS) -- Bell City outscored Puxico 12-5 in overtime to squeeze out a road victory. Nick Niemczyk led the Cubs (11-2) with 25 points. Ethan Watkins had 22 and hit five 3-pointers.

Freshman basketball

NEW MADRID -- The New Madrid County Central freshman basketball team defeated Cape Central 44-27 Monday night.

NMCC's Keith Holmes scored a game-high 20 points.

NMCC will be in action again Jan. 17 at Jackson. The game will begin at 5 p.m.
