SIKESTON - Sikeston's historic downtown has a bit more sparkle.

Sams Fine Jewelry opened April 7 at 13 E. Front St. and according to owner Sam Thomas can provide all the public's jewelry needs and more.

A goldsmith with some seven years experience, Thomas has an extensive background in the business. He has worked with jewelers and companies in Millington, Tenn.; Richland, Miss.; Chicago; New York City; and Sikeston.

Drawing many customers into the store are the lighted cases filled with an array of rings, bracelets and necklaces interspersed with crystal filled geodes and other rocks. Wall cases provide customers a glimpse of some of the crystal and silver wedding, anniversary and special occasion gifts also available at the local store.

"We have anything from promise rings to the diamonds of their choice," said Thomas about the selection.

While he offers items from such companies as ArtCarved Diamonds, La4ve rings, Leslie earrings, Alpha International, Britannia Bridal and Frederick Goldman, the largest wedding band company in the U.S., Thomas said many of his customers want him to create something unique for them.

"People like something a little different," he said about the rings and pendants he has made. Thomas added many of the custom-items he has created are for babies and include tiny bracelets and earrings.

Also Thomas takes pride in the repair work he can provide. "If it is metal I can work on it," he said. "And I offer same-day or next-day repair, which is why a lot of people come to me."

From his work station at the front of the store, customers can sit and watch as Thomas engraves or repairs their intricate jewelry and other items. Making use of a laser welder, he can also provide repairs for such things as silver, silverplate and delicate items which can't be subjected to high heat used in soldering.

Since opening, Thomas said business has been "incredible. Sikeston and the surrounding area has been very good to me. I just want to thank everybody."

Sams Fine Jewelry is opened from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
