SIKESTON -- The boys Class 4, District 1 Tournament will get underway tomorrow with two first round games at the Sikeston Field House.
In the first game, fourth-seeded Perryville (16-9) will play No. 5 Dexter (11-14) at 6 p.m. Third-seeded Fredericktown (14-8) will play No. 6 Ste. Genevieve (13-13) immediately after at 7:30 p.m.
The winner of the Perryville-Dexter game will play top-seeded Notre Dame (22-4) on Thursday at 6 p.m. while the winner of the Fredericktown-Ste. Genevieve game will play second-seeded Sikeston (16-8) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The championship game of the tournament is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m.
"It's going to be a great tournament," said Sikeston coach Gregg Holifield. "We're playing either Fredericktown or Ste. Gen and by no means are we looking past them. We played Fredericktown during the season and they gave us all we could handle and we know Ste. Genevieve is no push-over either. Whoever we play will be a difficult matchup for us."
Notre Dame enters the tournament as the favorite after an impressive regular season run, including an 86-75 victory against Sikeston at the Field House in December.
"They have a great team and a great program and they've had a great season," said Holifield of Notre Dame. "But our concern right now is Fredericktown and Ste. Gen. We're focused on those two and we'll take it one game at a time."
Sikeston captured last year's district championship as the top seed, defeating Notre Dame 69-65 in the title game, also held at the Field House. The Bulldogs went on to reach the Class 4 state championship game before falling to St. Francis Borgia, 77-62.
"It's always good to play at home in the Field House," said Holifield, whose team has won six straight games. "We normally play very well at home, so hopefully we'll continue that trend and put up a good showing. It should be a very exciting tournament and very competitive."
